Fishing derbies for children, ages 4 to 15, begin the last Saturday in April and continue throughout the summer. The Jack Cullen Memorial Towpath Trail Trout Derby takes place at the Lock 4 Trailhead along the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail, south of Canal Fulton. The derby is from 8 to 11 a.m. on April 29. Rainbow trout are stocked into the historic canal for the event. Children do not have to pre-register to fish in the derby.
Marinas at Sippo Lake Park in Perry Township and Walborn Reservoir in Alliance will open at 7 a.m., Sunday, May 1 for the season. The marinas will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays. Extended hours will begin Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day weekend.
Both marinas offer bait, beverages and light snacks for sale, as well as rental of motor boats, row boats, kayaks, and canoes. Pontoon boats may be rented by reservation only at least two weeks in advance.
A fishing pier and boat launch (boats up to 21 feet and 10 hp) are next to each marina.
Ohio fishing licenses are available for purchase at each marina. A Visa or MasterCard credit card and picture identification are needed to purchase a license (cash is not accepted). Residents age 16 and over must carry a fishing license and ID to fish at Stark Parks.
Sippo Lake Marina is located at 5300 Tyner St., Canton 44708 and Walborn Reservoir Marina is located at 11324 Price St. NE, Alliance 44601.
