Petros Lake Park and Trails

Open Daily: All parks are open 24 hours a day, unless otherwise posted.

Picnic, play, hike, and fish on 127 acres of water and rolling meadows at Petros Lake Park! You’ll find the Lakeview and Woodland picnic shelters, a loop trail around the lake, and several short nature trails. Both shelters include picnic tables, grills, electricity, and horseshoe courts.  The park is also home to a one-mile Mindfulness Walk with ten mental health stations along the route.

Reserve a Shelter

In the open prairie landscape you may see grey headed cone flowers and black-eyed susans in bloom. Along the trails you’ll be shaded by large hardwood trees such as shagbark hickory, red oak, black oak, black cherry, and hawthorn.

Named for the family on whose land it was built, Petros Lake was designed to funnel rain water away from the nearby Timken Faircrest Steel Plant. The area opened as a park in 1987.

Dogs welcome! Just remember that dogs must be leashed at all times, and owners must dispose of pet waste properly.  Fishing and carry-in boats are permitted, but ice fishing and skating are not permitted due to unstable ice conditions.

The Petros Lake Loop Trail has been adopted by Marathon Petroleum, the company sponsors cleanup projects along the trail throughout the year.

A project began in late 2023 to remove Callery pear trees from the Meadow Trail area.  These invasive trees out-compete native species and spread very fast.  Through 2024-25, restoration plantings and treatment will take place to make sure native plants and trees grow in this area and provide much improved habitat.  Learn more in the video below.

Bluebird Trail

Trail Length: 0.5 Miles

This mowed grass trail provides a scenic field setting dotted with benches and is a designated "no mow" area for wildlife. Nest boxes along the trail are frequented by bluebirds and tree swallows as they feed on insects during flight.

Hickory Trail

Trail Length: 0.3 Miles

Enjoy the shade and rustling leaves under a canopy of hardwood trees along this short natural surface trail. During the fall, you may even catch glimpses of white-tailed deer feeding on fallen crabapples.

Meadow Trail

Trail Length: 0.8 Miles

Trail will be closed throughout the winter months and is slated to be open during the spring of 2024.

This mowed grass trail loops through a grassland area near the corner of Navarre Rd. and Perry Dr. SW.  Warm season grasses and wildflowers have been planted in the last few years.   Sightings of deer and American woodcocks in the tall grass areas are common.

 

 

Petros Lake Loop Trail

Trail Length: 1.2 Miles

This limestone trail loops around the 13-acre Petros Lake. Gold finches and bluebirds fly in the meadow while several wildflower plantings and wildlife food plots attract a variety of butterflies.
